I ride a road bike four times a week. Twice during the work week, and twice on the weekend. Typically, I'll do about 100 miles a week. While riding a road bike might not seem like a strategy to stay motivated as a small business owner, I've found that riding long-distances help train muscles around "grit" and "longevity." Most investors will say "grit" is a critical element they elevate in a founder. That's because grit is a requirement to succeed in a startup, and founders need to train for it in order to maintain their motivation. For me, logging hours on a bike helps me practice staying motivated when the going gets tough. Whether it's a proverbial hill I'm tackling in my startup or whether I'm physically climbing a mountain, the more you practice climbing, the more you'll know how to maintain motivation.
